Otoscope ear examination before ear wax removal

Three methods, chosen for you

Your clinician examines your ears first, then recommends the safest, most effective method for you.

Microsuction
Gentle suction under direct vision — no water, no mess. The gold-standard method, suitable for most ears.
Water irrigation
A controlled, body-temperature flow of water that softly flushes wax away. Comfortable and highly effective.
Manual removal
Fine instruments used with precision for wax sitting near the entrance of the ear canal.
Video otoscopy
See inside your own ears before and after treatment — you watch the difference for yourself.

What to expect at your appointment

Your visit takes around 10–15 minutes. After a short health questionnaire, your clinician examines both ears with an otoscope, explains what they can see, and recommends a removal method.

Treatment is carried out there and then. Afterwards your ears are re-checked, you see the before-and-after on video otoscopy, and you leave with tailored aftercare advice.

Full ear health check included with every visit
Pay after treatment, by cash or card
Free follow-up if hard wax needs a second visit

Before your appointment

If you can, apply olive oil or softening drops for 2–3 days before your visit — it makes removal quicker and more comfortable. Not essential though: still come in, especially for same-day appointments.

Please avoid cotton buds and ear candles. They push wax deeper and can damage the ear canal or eardrum.

Symptoms of ear wax build-up

Blocked or muffled hearing, earache, tinnitus (ringing), itchiness, dizziness and a feeling of fullness are the most common signs of excess ear wax. Hearing aid users often notice whistling or reduced performance.

If symptoms appear suddenly or come with pain and discharge, mention it when you book — we’ll check for infection during your examination.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a same-day appointment?
Yes — our Glasgow clinic offers a same-day appointment guarantee, and same-day slots are available in Manchester too. Call as early as possible or book online.
Is ear wax removal painful?
No — the procedure is gentle, safe and pain-free. You may feel light suction or water flow, and our clinicians will adjust or pause at any time if you feel discomfort.
Do I need to use oil before treatment?
Using olive oil or softening drops for 2–3 days beforehand helps, but it is not mandatory — still attend, especially for same-day appointments. Avoid cotton buds and ear candles.
How long does an appointment take?
Typically 10–15 minutes: a short health questionnaire, a visual ear health check, the treatment itself, then a re-check and aftercare advice.
What if no wax is found?
A £20 consultation fee applies, covering the clinician’s time and a full ear health assessment. Payment is taken after treatment, by cash or card.
What is the best treatment for a blocked ear?
If the blockage is caused by wax, professional removal — microsuction or water irrigation — is the quickest, safest blocked ear treatment and usually restores hearing instantly. If we find no wax, we will explain the likely cause, advise on next steps, and you only pay the £20 ear health check fee.
