Which method will I get? Microsuction vs water irrigation vs manual removal

Unlike clinics that only offer a single technique, our Manchester team is equipped and trained for all three professional removal methods — so the treatment fits your ears, not the other way round.

The first option is microsuction: a fine, gentle suction wand used while the clinician views your ear canal directly. Nothing wet touches the ear, which makes it suitable for the widest range of patients — including anyone with a perforated eardrum, grommets in the past, or a tendency to ear infections. For most people, this is the method we reach for first.

The second is water irrigation — today’s safe, machine-controlled successor to the old GP syringe. Warm water is directed along the canal wall at a gentle, regulated pressure to float softened wax out. If you have been using olive oil for a few days beforehand, irrigation can clear even heavy build-up remarkably quickly.

The third is manual removal, where the clinician uses small specialist instruments to hook or lift wax that sits close to the canal entrance — often the finishing touch after suction or irrigation has done the heavy lifting.

There is nothing for you to decide beforehand: after examining your ears with the video otoscope, your clinician recommends whichever method is right for you on the day, at no extra cost.

How to prepare: our pre-appointment wax-softening routine

You can turn up to our Manchester clinic completely unprepared and we will still do our best — but a few days of softening drops beforehand noticeably improves how quickly and comfortably wax comes out. Our recommended routine is:

Booked a same-day slot? Don’t worry about the oil — just come in. Same-day treatment without any preparation is routine for our clinicians, and at worst you may be offered a free follow-up if a stubborn plug needs softening first.

Whatever you do before your visit, keep cotton buds and ear candles well away from your ears. Buds push wax further down the canal and can impact it against the drum, while candling is both ineffective and a genuine burn hazard.

Start olive oil drops from the pharmacy 2–3 days ahead of your appointment where possible
2–3 drops per affected ear, 2–3 times daily
Stay lying on your side for about a minute afterwards to let the oil reach the wax
Never insert cotton buds and never try ear candles
Bring a list of the medications you take, plus a note of any past ear operations or known perforations
No oil? Come anyway — this applies doubly to same-day bookings

What happens at your appointment

Set aside around half an hour for your Manchester visit — the removal itself usually takes just 10–15 minutes. The appointment follows six clear steps:

Before you leave we will talk you through our aftercare advice — simple steps to keep your ears healthy between visits. You only pay once treatment is complete, by cash or card, and if the otoscope shows there is no wax to remove, the charge is just £20 for the consultation and ear health check. To arrange your visit, book online or ring the Manchester clinic on 0161 399 5268.

Whether you call it ear wax removal or professional ear cleaning, every appointment in Manchester starts with a full video otoscope examination of both ears.

A brief health questionnaire about your ears, symptoms and medical history
A video otoscope examination — the camera image appears on screen so you can see inside your own ears
Your clinician explains what they have found and which removal method they recommend, and why
Treatment, typically lasting 10–15 minutes, paused at any point if you want a breather
A final check with before-and-after otoscope views so the result is visible, not just described
Tailored aftercare guidance, including whether a routine return visit would help you

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a same-day appointment?
Yes — our Glasgow clinic offers a same-day appointment guarantee, and same-day slots are available in Manchester too. Call as early as possible or book online.
Do I need to use oil before treatment?
Using olive oil or softening drops for 2–3 days beforehand helps, but it is not mandatory — still attend, especially for same-day appointments. Avoid cotton buds and ear candles.
Is ear wax removal painful?
No — the procedure is gentle, safe and pain-free. You may feel light suction or water flow, and our clinicians will adjust or pause at any time if you feel discomfort.
What if no wax is found?
A £20 consultation fee applies, covering the clinician’s time and a full ear health assessment. Payment is taken after treatment, by cash or card.
What does ear wax removal cost at the Manchester clinic?
It is £45 for one ear and £60 for both — the price is the same whichever removal method your clinician uses, and the examination is included. If we look and find your ears are actually clear, you pay just a £20 consultation fee rather than the treatment price. Home visits across Greater Manchester cost £84.99 for both ears, travel included.
How often will I need my ears cleared?
There is no fixed schedule — it depends on how quickly your ears produce wax. Many Manchester patients only ever need one visit; frequent producers, hearing aid users and swimmers often return every 6–12 months. Your clinician will tell you honestly whether regular visits are worthwhile for you, based on what they see during your examination.
How safe is microsuction?
Very. Because the clinician watches the ear canal directly throughout and no water is involved, microsuction carries a lower risk of infection or eardrum trauma than any other method. Every clinician at our Manchester clinic is NHS-trained. Our [microsuction page](/microsuction-ear-wax-removal/) explains the procedure in detail.
I have a perforated eardrum — can you still treat me?
In most cases, yes. A perforation rules out water-based methods, but microsuction is dry and can usually be performed safely. Mention it when booking and your clinician will assess the eardrum with the video otoscope before deciding, so nothing is done that isn’t safe for your ear.
Does wax cause problems with hearing aids?
Yes — it is one of the most common reasons hearing aids whistle, cut out or sound dull, because the aid blocks the canal and stops wax working its way out. We clear the wax, check the canal and let you test your aids before you leave. Plenty of our regular Manchester patients are hearing aid wearers.
Can my child be seen at the Manchester clinic?
We treat children from age 5. Appointments are unhurried — the clinician shows your child what the camera sees, explains each step and never forces treatment on an anxious child. Our [children’s ear wax removal](/childrens-ear-wax-removal/) page has more on what to expect.
Is there parking at the Manchester clinic?
Yes — there is free patient parking on site at Piccadilly Business Centre, Aldow Enterprise Park (M12 6AE). We are a five-minute drive from Manchester Piccadilly station and easy to reach from the Mancunian Way, with buses along Ashton Old Road stopping close by.
Can you come to my home instead?
We can. Our home visit service covers Greater Manchester and much of the North West, at £84.99 for both ears with travel included — ideal if mobility, transport or caring responsibilities make the clinic difficult. See [home ear wax removal](/home-ear-wax-removal/) or call 0161 399 5268 to arrange a visit.
What if my wax is too stubborn to remove in one appointment?
It is rare, but very hard or deeply impacted wax sometimes needs softening first. In that case your clinician will send you away with an olive oil plan and see you again for a free follow-up — the return visit for the same blockage costs you nothing.
Do you write to my GP if you find something unusual?
Every appointment includes a full ear health check, and if your clinician spots anything that warrants medical review — an infection, a perforation, or anything they are not happy with — they will tell you plainly and, with your permission, send a letter to your GP to speed up your care.
Can I claim on private health insurance?
Many health cash plans and insurers reimburse ear wax removal. We will happily give you an itemised receipt at the end of your appointment to submit with your claim.
When is the Manchester clinic open?
Seven days a week, 9am to 9pm — evenings and weekends included, so you rarely need time off work. [Book online](/book-now/) 24/7 or call 0161 399 5268 (national line 0330 043 6890).
What payment methods do you accept?
You pay after your treatment, and we take cash, all major cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Clearpay — whatever is easiest for you.
Do you offer ear syringing in Manchester?
Yes — in its modern, safer form. We use controlled water irrigation, the technique that has replaced traditional ear syringing, alongside microsuction and manual removal. Your clinician recommends the right method after examining your ears.
